My personal favorite for a pistol is the 10mm. I just wish there were more models available. I also like the .45acp alot, never owned a .40SW(aka "10mm short"),bought and sold numerous 9mm and only have one "pocket nine" left.

My defense gun and caliber of choice is my S&W 38 Spec +P. I like this gun for several reasons. It is VERY comfortable to carry, very easy to conceal, and with the +P loads has more than enough power to get the job done. I've owned and shot several 9mm and this has just as much pop as any of them with the +P loads. I have a .40 which I love but it is full size and not so easy to conceal. If you think about it though with shot placement being your #1 concern than most any caliber would work.

The 10mm wasn't popular long because, from what I've understood, it uses a large pistol primer and during clearing operations, was too easy to be struck by the ejector causing accidents. It was replaced with the .40 cal that uses a small pistol primer and is less likely to strike the ejector. They're the same diameter. The .40 was supposed to be a compromise of a .45 acp and 9mm luger. 45 has great knockdown / stopping power, but is large for high cap magazines. The 9mm is small and fast at 115 grain bullets & 1150-1200 fps or so, typically, and too much penetration results without knockdown. The .40 is a good compromise of them both and lends itself to high cap mags more so than what the .45 offers. For self defense, you're not going to get into a fire fight, so high cap shouldn't be a factor. An effective round that's going to get you out of a situation is better, but having it easy to control in a concealed carry configuration is important also. A Glock 27 is nice and small, but for some a bit too much for a frame that small to control easily.
